Last night we watched a special on PBS about Saudi Arabia. I think I've seen it before but I guess I needed a reintroduction because I was really shocked by most of what I saw and heard.
I did not know that the King of Saudi Arabia gave the first Bush administration carte blanche in the first Gulf war. The total cost was over 50 billion dollars and it seems that Bush took from the Saudis more than the war actually cost because the King let the U.S. write it's own check... That's a nice way to treat your friends.
I was also surprised to learn that during the first Saudi oil embargo "the Nixon years", that Nixon and Kissinger actually planned to invade Saudi Arabia and seize their oil fields because the embargo was causing fuel supply problems in the Vietnam conflict.
During the presentation I had an epiphany about why we went to war in Iraq. I think Bush is worried about the stability of Saudi Arabia and that he's decided not to wait and see what happens but take the Iraqi oil and let the Saudis have their revolution.
I think the issue of when the troops will be coming home is really moot because they are never coming home, they can't.
The security of the United States is tied to Middle Eastern oil for the foreseeable future. We are now joined at the hip and I think the long range planners have decided that we cannot afford to let them run their own affairs, especially when they run contrary to the needs of the U.S.
Saudi Arabia isn't a good candidate because of it's significance to the world of Islam, all those holy places and such, but Iraq is a different story.
I also think that we Americans are not getting the full story from the news media.
The new budget from the White House is incredible! 2.5 trillion dollars!!! And it doesn't even include the war!
Bush has a master plan, and it is to enrich his supporters at the cost of everyone else. Secure Iraq for the American oil companies, end just about every federally funded entitlement program that helps anyone living below the poverty level, especially African-Americans and Mexicans, and he's even screwing with veterans and farmers...
I guess that even when the religious right wingers don't have a pot to piss in they'll still be bitching about the Gay marriage issue...
Even when they're eating dog food to save money for their Viagra they'll be bitching about abortion...
And even after Social Security is gone, after 60 or 70 thousand American men and women have died in Iraq, they'll still be calling Bush the 1st a "national treasure" and Bush II an "American Hero" right up there with Kobe Bryant...
