If we bother to remember what the U.S. Government did to Japanese-Americans during the 2nd World War, you can understand how serious this cartoon really is.
Japanese-Americans were packed off to concentration camps and their property was seized and it wasn't until many years later that the U.S. Government made a lame attempt to apologize and compensate them for their suffering.
Those people's lives were destroyed because of blind, unreasonable fear, fear that was soon replaced by evil greed and racism. And it was done in the name of the U.S. Government (in the People's name) by men who had their own dark reasons.
I think a lot of Americans are basically good people, but the folks in-charge of the whole shebang are not bothered with goodness, they are motivated by greed and avarice. They don't believe that all Americans are equal, they don't believe that we should all have access to basic health care, they don't believe that we should have an opportunity to live a full and good working life and then be able to retire knowing that we can look forward to some basic minimum financial support (Social Security).
These folks don't hate us as much as they simply don't care, so long as they have everything they desire, and so long as nothing is left for anyone else. They don't hate us, they just have a hard time acknowledging that we are actually people, and not slaves.
Here's a pic of my barracks at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, on our training cycle's graduation day, sometime in late February or early March 1974.
Every morning we would be gathered right there, in front, into unit formations and then we'd be marched off to some hellish training area out in the boonies. Every day was a high-anxiety day because we never knew what was going to happen next, and they were always threatening to ship us off to Viet Nam!
