I think he'd already completed two tours in Viet Nam, and make no mistake, he was a hardass. But I never had a run-in with him, he always treated me properly.

I was not the best trainee. I wore very thick glasses and I had some difficulty with the physical training.

It seems I scored high on my tests because at the beginning of my training cycle they tried to send me to Officer's Candidate School. They got me in a room and told me that I'd been selected for OCS. I respectfully declined, which caused a great deal of yelling at me. But they couldn't make me do it. I told that I didn't want to extend my enlistment to 6 years, from 3, because that is what I would have had to do to get into OCS. I also knew that I was Gay, and being Gay and an enlisted man was not a crime but being Gay and an officer could get me thrown into the stockade. I just told them that I didn't want to be bossing anyone else around.

After that, I was sort of treated differently by the brass. I wasn't treated worse or better, just "differently". It's hard to describe. Honestly, I think they thought that I was a undercover military cop.
