In Response To: Good to have you back (Allan)

Allan,

Yeah, 4 more years... I just hope that it passes by quickly. I feel bad for all of the parents who will be sending their boys and girls off to fight and maybe even die in Iraq or Afghanistan or maybe even North Korea or Iran. Fortunately it won't be any of my nephews or neices because we'll back them off to Canada or Europe when the draft comes. I feel so stupid that just a few years ago I was encouraging them to think about the armed forces as a career choice or as a way to save money for college.

I was just talking with a friend who works for the INS and he says that his buddies who are coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq don't have anything good to say about it or they won't talk about it at all.

The grout guy is repairing some tiles that line the shower of an apartment that I have rented to a new tenant who wants to move in this weekend. There was a steam pipe leaking inside the wall behind the shower. Keep in mind that my building was constructed in 1914 and unlike construction today there is a lot of space between the outer wall of the building and the inside wall of the apartment. there's enough space for a full grown man to actually stand up inside.

So the plumber made a hole big enough for him (he's about 6'2") to crawl inside and fix the steam pipe that was leaking and then the plaster guy sealed up the hole and now the grout guy is going to tile over the plaster and then the plumber is coming back to install a new shower mixer valve. Lord have mercy, it never ends...

It's really a weird building as there's enough dead space between the walls and the ceilings and the floors for a whole other building! I started working here in 1986 and about that time I found the original construction plans and the specifications but I am still discovering things that are not in the plans.

Once we had a murder and the cops were trying to find some bullets that went into the ceiling so they made a small hole and discovered that there was three feet of empty space above the solid two inch thick plaster ceiling. They never found the missing bullets. All kinds of things happen in apartment buildings...

My eyes! My eyes! I didn't have any problems as I wore sunglasses most of the time. It was nice to swim in the ocean and not worry about losing my glasses.

My sight is very good and always getting better except at night when I get these weird halos so driving at night is quite out of the question.

They told me I would probably need reading glasses but I can read without glasses just fine, but I do have a pair of reading glasses that I use when I am working with tiny parts like the inside of my PC.

Would I do it again? I think I need to wait a few months because I can tell that my eyes are still learning how to see properly without glasses.

The biggest problem is that I have always had a lot of floaters" and now I can really see them all of the time and they actually get in the way.

I can also see my eye lashes and they get in the way too. This was a problem when I wore glasses. I used to get very frustrated with them and cut them off but they just grew back.

When I was a baby one of my cousins took a pair of sissors and got into my crib and cut off my eye lashes because she thought they were too long. My mother couldn't figure out why I looked different... Ha ha.

Also my my eyes are kind of sensitive to pressure, they often feel weird if I am sleeping face down and my pillow presses up against them. They can actually hurt if an eyelash comes off and gets into my eyes. I didn't anticipate that there would be all of these issues. I guess if I were younger I would have adapted a lot quicker.

Here's a pic of the Easy Rock at Mary's Bay.
