Good Sunday morning to you.

The big winter storm of 2005 is over. The drifting snow is collecting in tall piles all over the place. Under their white blankets are cars and trucks frozen solid in the ice and snow.

Today their owners need to get outside and shovel the snow off and move the cars to plowed streets or the tow trucks will haul them to the city yard.

I have little sympathy for them. I spent most of Saturday morning shoveling and blowing the snow off the sidewalks only to see folks moving the snow from on top of their cars back onto the sidewalk. Then they drive their cars out of the space that they just cleared only to see other drivers immediately pull in and take the shoveled space and practically run away as fast as possible.

Today it won't get warm enough for the salt to melt any of the snow but Monday the weather folks say the temps will climb and the melt will begin.

Here in Milwaukee the snow melts away almost as fast as the storm dumped it on the streets. By next Friday you will probably have a hard time believing that we even had a big snow storm.

I usually don't buy or read the local Sunday newspaper, which is the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, but there's a very touching story about Marines in Iraq. I've made a link to the article and I suggest that everyone read it and have a good cry.

One of the talking heads on CNN just announced that contrary to what Bush said in his inaugural speech, he doesn't plan on going to war to liberate any oppressed peoples, so we can all relax... I have to wonder if anyone at the White House actually read Bush's speech before he delivered it? I would have thought that Bush would have his hands full with Iraq and Afghanistan but Bush is more of a hands off Commander in Chief.

Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove give the orders and expect the Pentagon to implement them, no questions asked, no bad news appreciated.

Does anyone in the Bush administration actually have any family members who are serving in the military, and not in some cushy Pentagon desk job?

I have a lot of sympathy for the soldiers who are fighting the Iraqi insurgents, but as I was once a soldier myself, I knew the risk and I'm sure they knew it too.

No one enlists in the military without a full understanding of what might be ahead. I was warned so many times that I would probably be sent to Viet Nam and I can still remember how relieved I was when my orders came down sending me to Germany, whew!

Here's a pic of a rain shower out in the Long Bay. The first week of January was uncharacteristically cool in Negril, and the humidity was very low. It rained a bit and there were some dark clouds about but nothing dramatic. The winds were calm and though the locals were wearing longs pants and two or three layered shirts, we were wearing almost nothing, basking in the warm temps and soothing sunshine.

Fortunately, no one in our party suffered from over exposure to the sun because everyone was slathered with waterproof spf50 sunblock every morning.

Commander's e-mails touch hearts of Marines'...
