Today, with this posting, I am going to begin to describe in plain english how to make a web server and use it to share your media files to all of the PCs on your home network and how to install the software for this type of forum.
To start out you will need a working PC. The working PC needs a network card and a CD-ROM drive as well as a internal hard drive. If you have recently purchased a new PC to replace your old slower PC, this is a useful purpose for your old PC, so long as it is functional.
If your old PC is running Win98 or Win2000 or WinME or even XP, and everything is working properly, then it will do just fine.
Make sure you have removed all of the files on your old PC that you want to keep, and that you have your original Windows OS installation disks because you may wish to restore your old PC to it's original condition at some future time.
Be warned that we are going to erase the hard drive and all of the files on it will be gone forever so if you have pics or movies or music or other documents that you want to save, now is the time to save them but I am assuming that when you bought your new PC that you saved those files and now your old PC is sitting in a closet, unused and forgotten, but not for long.
So drag that PC out, connect a mouse, keyboard and monitor and get ready for the next step.
Please keep in mind that I am going to provide some very basic and easy to understand instructions. Once you have completed all of the steps you may wish to go back and do it all again and again. This is a good way to learn how to build and maintain a web server.
