There are probably 30 steps in this process so I want to advise you to locate your Linux server right next to your Windows PC. If you don't have room for two monitors and two keyboards with mice then get a small, cheap KVM switch. KVM means "Keyboard-Video-Mouse".
A KVM switch will cost less than $20 and let you hook your server and your Windows PC to the same keyboard, mouse and monitor and then you can easily switch between them.
If you already have a broadband connection (cable or DSL) you must already have a broadband modem and you probably have a router too, but to connect your new server to the same internet connection as your WinPC you will need a broadband router that has more than one port to plug in your server and your WinPC computer or you need a multi-port network hub.
This image shows how to connect your hub to your router. The most common hub costs about $20.00 and has four ports. A cheap hub will work fine, don't spend a lot on your hub.
If you don't have a broadband router yet, you will need one.
I would like to suggest that you purchase a 2Wire Home Portal Model 100 or 165 router.
If you have a cable broadband connection I suggest the 165 model.
2Wire Home Portals are hard to find brand new, but you can find them on ebay.com or call your service provider and ask them if they sell 2Wire Routers.
I suggest using a 2Wire broadband router because they are very easy to use and have all of the features and options that you will ever need and they can be updated online.
I have a 2Wire 100 and I love it! Even a dolt like me can set them up properly. Linksys and Netgear routers are really a bitch to set up properly because they are designed by engineers who appear to believe that we are all geniuses.
Get a 2Wire even if you already have a router and you'll never regret it. Prices on ebay will vary but a used 2Wire Home Portal should not cost more than $150.00 and may be found for less.
